May is National Suicide Prevention Month

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are 123 suicides each day in the United States. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in adults and the second leading cause for those ages 10 to 34.

While it’s difficult to talk about suicide, it is essential that those in need be able to access the support they need. During this month, organizations, mental health professionals, survivors, and allies come together to raise awareness around suicide, bust stigma, and promote suicide prevention efforts.

This year, the CDC has developed a social media toolkit for suicide prevention month that includes sample graphics and messages that highlight how personal connections are key to preventing suicide. These tools can be used to promote the new 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and encourage people to reach out for help when they need it most.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness is a national organization that helps those who have suffered from suicide, assists with sourcing effective treatment services, and works to prevent suicide by advocating for better mental health care. NAMI also provides resources to those who are concerned about a friend or loved one with suicide concerns.
